Gov. Scott Signs Bill Targeting Companies That Do Business With Cuba, Syria
Florida Governor Rick Scott is in the hot seat after he signed a bill this week making it illegal for state and local Florida governments to use public funds to hire companies conducting business with Cuba and Syria. The hotly debated bill, which was filed in December 2011, was publicly opposed by the Florida Chamber of Commerce as well as countries like Canada and Brazil who said the signing of the bill would likely jeopardize future trading between Florida and their countries. Scott signed the bill into law at the Freedom Tower Tuesday morning. The bill's proper name, House Bill 959, was passed nearly unanimously in the Legislature. It is unclear how many Florida businesses will be affected by the new legislation.
